Beginning of Year Newsletter

Dear Parents,

What an exciting year we have ahead of us! Fourth grade is full of great units, great literature and great friends.

It is our goal to establish efficient communication between home and school.  This year we will use student planners as one method of communicating with you on a daily basis.  The planners fit neatly into a three-ring binder and come predated for this school year.   Each child is responsible for writing down his/her homework assignments for each day in the appropriate section.  Any incomplete class assignments will be considered homework and are due the following day.  A circled assignment in the student planner indicates incomplete work. Notes from the teacher in regards to you child’s conduct/work habits can be found at the bottom of each day’s column. Please let us know you have seen these notes by signing the planner daily.

Your child should also be writing the name of the book and how long they are reading each night on the separate “Reading Log” sheet in their binder. (A completed sheet earns them bonus class money.)

Every Thursday, your child will receive a packet containing completed work from the previous week and school related papers. Please review and discuss the papers/grades with your child. This way, we will have a clear and effective way of communicating with you about your child’s progress. Please sign the agenda stating you have received the weekly papers.

A morning snack is optional.  We are requesting that your child bring in a nutritional snack.  A good rule of thumb when sending prepackaged items is to check the ingredients to see if either of the first two ingredients is sugar. If so, the item is probably better for a dessert than a nutritious snack.  Examples of nutritional snacks are raisins, cheese, crackers, fruits, raw veggies, or granola bars, Bottled water is helpful for keeping the children healthy and ready to learn. Please allow them to bring a water bottle of some sort each day. No flavored drinks, please.

Often times, when a child has a birthday, parents like to send in cupcakes. This year we are recommending a small favor such as new pencils or erasers. If you choose to send food, please do not send anything that contains nuts or peanut oil as we will have a student with life-threatening allergies to these products. Please check with the teacher to make sure none of the children are allergic to any other foods.  PARENTS, PLEASE LET THE TEACHER KNOW IF YOUR CHILD HAS A SERIOUS FOOD ALLERGY.

Each year, the teachers plan certain field trips to enhance the curriculum.  We have four that we like to have each year.  They are

1.Youth

Museum

, 2. High Touch / High Tech F0RCES AND MOTION, and 3. The Civil

War

Museum

in Kennesaw.  Please help us by sending in donations with your child’s permission slip.  If sufficient funds are not collected, the field trip will be cancelled.

Please remember, any time you wish to change your child’s transportation home from school, you must send a note informing the teacher of the change. Without a note, your child must go home as per the original mode of transport.

All four fourth grade classrooms will be participating in Democratic Service Learning Projects throughout this year. Please take the time to ask about the benefits of service-learning and how you can volunteer with us to make our community a better place.

Finally, fourth grade is planning a “Regions Day” on September 28, 2007. That day the students will explore the characteristics of five

United States

regions and the Native Americans from the regions, by traveling from room to room. Each room will be made up to represent a different region. We are currently looking for volunteers to help plan, decorate and participate in this event. Please let your child’s teacher know if you are able to help.

We look forward to seeing you at Open House on August 23rd. This will be a time when you can learn about your child’s curriculum and expectations for the fourth grade. Feel free to contact us anytime you have a question about your child. (My email is Linda.Lambert@cobbk12.org) I will also have a blog connected to our

Addison

website where you may view information about our classroom.

                                                          Sincerely,

                                                          Fourth Grade Teachers

                                                          Linda Lambert

Student Supply List

A Student Supply list is located on the Addison website. Supplies are very important for a child to be organized and prepared for school. Please check with your child to make sure they have pencils, paper, and glue, as these are items that are used up quickly. Encourage your child to use their folders and spirals to help with organization of subject materials and assignments.

Fourth Grade Field Trips

Fourth Grade field trips are used to give hands on activities that reinforce what the students are learning.  This year we have planned a trip to the Cobb Youth Museum where each child will participate in a play about America's colonial past. We will also visit The Museum of Locomotive and Civil War History in Kennesaw. Our third trip is an in-house visit of a HighTouch High Tech scientist teaching us about Motion and Force. Your generous contributions allow us to have educational experiences for our children.

Sitton Spelling

Sitton Spelling is the program Addison uses to teach spelling. It consists of priority words, core word, ,and review words. Students are expected to spell th 75 priority words correctly at all times. If these words are misspelled, the grade will be an automatic N. Core words are introduced weekly and will become the priority words for next year. Review words are words that have been previously on the students weekly lists and the students are responsible for these words from that point on. Students have a spelling folder with lists of these words. The students will be given a preview list on Monday along with a  "Dear Parent" activity that is connected  to the skill  that is tested on their spelling review on Friday. Three achievement tests are given three times during the year to test their progress.

Homework Reinforces Learning

Homework is an important part of learning. Students entering fourth grade are expected to review addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts in addition to their nightly homework. A fourth grade student is expected to have about 40 minutes of homework per night plus 30 minutes of reading.  Students write their assignments in their agenda daily, and should complete and return on due date. Reading should be recorded on their reading log. A completed reading log is turned in to me for credit toward their reading grade. Classwork that is not finished in class should be completed that night for homework. Long term assignments, such as book reports and projects, are assigned weeks in advance. Incomplete assignments are circled in the agenda to be completed by Friday of that week, or attend study hall during recess.

Welcome to Fourth Grade

I would like to introduce myself and share a little about my classroom. My name is Linda Lambert. I have been  a teacher for 20 years and at Addison for 13 years. I completed my BS in Elementary Education from The University of South Alabama. I recently completed my MS in Early Childhood from Kennesaw State University. I have taught all grades from 2-8, but fourth grade is my favorite. I love teaching and look forward to seeing children learn daily. I believe that every child can learn although they may learn in different ways. I use many teaching styles so that all students will have the opportunity to learn in a way that best suits them.I hope this blog will allow you to get a glimpse of what my classroom is like.

Book Report

Our first book report is a book of your choice. The students will select a book of at least 50 pages. After reading their book, taking notes, and creating a project of their choice to share their book with the class, the students will present their report. Have fun reading!
