In January we will learn about Jan Brett. She travels around the world to do research before writing her books. In addition to drawing pictures to support the main story, she includes borders on the side of the page that have pictures adding additional information about the supporting characters, and sometimes gives a preview as to what will happen on the next page. We will also learn how Mrs. Brett uses her pets and the people around her to pose as the characters in the books. It is fun to look at the real person or pets photographs and compare them to what she has drawn in the book. Jan Brett has a fantastic website. You can visit it at http://www.janbrett.com
We will not have a book club meeting in January. The ten students that were chosen to represent Addison in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl will meet to practice on Monday, January 14. The actual county competition is on Saturday, January 26 at Osborne High School. You are invited to support our students at this county competition.
This month we will learn about Lois Ehlert. She uses items from around the house to create collages. We will do this same activity, after we read the book Snowballs. We discuss how she uses the triangle to create animal faces in the book Mole's Hill. After reading the book the students will be given the outline of an animal with a triangle face to create a picture.
